A Pitmaston Duchess variety of Pyrus communis.
A native of Great Britain and Ireland planted in 2025 as an 8-year old sapling on the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe day as part of a commemoration fair dedicated to Peace. The trees status is indicated on a plaque planted at its foot. It can be found in Elmhurst Park at What3Words ///viewer.than.grazed
The variety was raised in 1841 at Pitmaston Worcestershire by renowned local nurseryman John Williams from stock then named as Duchesse d'Angouleme.
As a fine partly self-pollinating garden pear with attractively scented white flowers, soft fruit flavours in September and good autumn foliage colour, it is acknowledged today by the RHS Award of Garden Merit
The pear's more globally widespread and ancient origins have associated it with abundance and longevity - characteristics that this website aspires for each of us, acting together, to bestow on peace itself.
